The team tried to clear out the areas with most zombies with the remaining soldiers and fighters. Fortunately, the ’leaks’ had been settled and they focused more on clearing out the zombies already inside.

Kylo, though, remained nearby the helicopters. They went down about a hundred meters from where he shot, managing to roughly land on a clearing there. The machines were a bit damaged and the people were roughened up, but everyone inside was alive.

This was on purpose, of course. Kylo damaged it in a way that wouldn’t mess too much with the control, and every pilot was trained to do emergency landings so he didn’t worry about them crashing to death. After all, there was still Khalifa’s friend Claire in there.

However, the noise had attracted a lot of zombies and soon they were surrounded by a mob. Groggy and shocked from impact, they were not ready for a barrage of zombies.

But these people were—shamefully—soldiers and after losing a few, they did gather themselves and started killing them off.

Kylo watched them struggle without a change in expression.

Partially it was to watch the people who almost killed them suffer, but there was also the fact their energies weren’t unlimited. They had to start choosing their fights wisely.

Even Khalifa had begun to save energy. At this time, she was swiping around her using the sword extended by her ice to retain some deadliness while consuming minimal abilities.

She also made a point of helping those who tried to fight as well. Even if their weapons were bent pipes or twigs, it didn’t matter, she hung around them.

“Help us!” some people yelled, hiding at a higher floor. They yelled at her through the balcony.

She gave them a blank stare, “I am not your guard,” she said, “I may help if I feel you want to live.”

“We want to live!”

“Then fight!” she yelled. She then threw them a couple of weapons. The civilians screamed as they looked at the sharp blades barrelling towards them.

“AHH!”

Clank! Clank!

The weapons’ blades stabbed right at the side of the windows, near enough for their reach.

They didn’t even have the time to think where the heck she got the weapons from and just took them, prepared to fight for their lives like everyone else.

…

Their area was further cleared with so many helping out now. It soon reduced to one person to two zombies, until it was one-on-one, and it was only a matter of time before the zombies could be dealt with.

It wasn’t a lie—their distractions and movements really helped her conserve energy.

The fights in their area soon became light enough for cooperating parties to comment on Khalifa’s and her men’s awesomeness.

“So strong…” one said. “I heard they already cleared the outer circle.”

“I wonder when I will awaken abilities…”

“I saw a few others already, especially the soldiers.”

“Why? Is it due to physique?”

“I knew I should’ve exercised more!”

The fact that people could start chattering a bit in contrast to their terrified hopeless look was a nice sight to have.

Khalifa giggled beautifully, energizing the people, especially the men.

“I’m sure many of you will awaken. Even if you didn’t, you can contribute in other ways,” she said, “You could farm, make feed, create resources.

“So… everyone fights to live, okay?”

“Yes, Miss Khalifa!!”

***

The clean up continued with Khalifa and the team assisting as needed, slowly recovering their energies in case stronger enemies arrived.

At some point though, she saw an acquaintance. He was holding an old sword, bravely swinging to clear up his path. He looked desperate to get somewhere. However, the path wasn’t easy as his weapon gave way after a while.

CRACK!

Roar!

The man paled as the zombies lunged at him. Khalifa stepped forward, gesturing to help, but paused when she felt a force gathering around him.

Before the zombie could get to him, the young man desperately pushed them away—but he didn’t touch them. Khalifa saw it was a wind ability.

He was shocked at first and broke into a relieved smile, moving with even more gusto than before.

Khalifa nodded and cleared several zombies in his way. “Chris!”

“K-Khalifa!” He gasped, still recovering, pale, and sweaty in pain. “Help! Claire, they—they took her!”

“I see,” she said, eyebrows furrowed, using her ability to improve his wound a bit. It wasn’t completely healed as she had to maintain some energy, but it was enough to stop it from debilitating him.

Chris was still very impatient. It was as if a second later would mean Claire’s life and death.

And very possibly so.

“Help me!” he yelled, his eyes red in worry. She nodded.

“Of course.”

Together, they headed to where the helicopter landed roughly. Khalifa was also a bit worried the impact shocked Claire too much.

They had thought of the possibility they’d be bringing Claire, a pregnant woman, so Kylo rushed to take it down while it wasn’t too high up.

They arrived to see the helicopters surrounded by a small mob of zombies, with the soldiers in the helicopters killing a lot of those that attacked them.

At this point only about half a dozen soldiers, including Hilten and General Smith, were left.

Khalifa saw Claire looking weak on the side, being pulled by the old man. The old man seemed injured from the crash and she was being forced to heal him.

She looked pale and weak. She also had a few scratches but she didn’t have the energy to handle her own wounds.

The sight made Chris’ eyes red with anger and he couldn’t help but remember Claire’s suffering back when they were captured.

Although he was mostly unconscious, he still heard a lot of her sobs and their words. It broke his heart and he swore to cause pain to the people who hurt her!

Khalifa felt the surroundings got a bit windy and she looked at the man beside her. She patted his arm and shook her head.

“It’s not the time yet,” she said, nothing everyone’s position. With Claire’s current state, moving now would be too risky.

“But it will come. I promise.”
