Chapter 347: 347. The Sisters Wants To Be Impregnated As Well? (Nah, I Don’t Think I Will)

Lily held Rex’s hand for a block, and Diana’s shoulder brushed against his at two of the busier intersections.

“She looked the same.” Diana said, “Other than the part where she was pregnant.”

“Marceline is pregnant too.” Diana said, “How do you know that?”

“You’re so innocent when it comes to a talk like this.” Diana sighed.

“Both Marceline and Mara,” Lily said, “were pregnant at the same time.”

Rex kept going while thinking to himself. ’These two girls… what are they on about now…’

Diana said, “It is.”

Diana said, “Those are relevant details in context.”

For a moment, they were quiet.

“Mm,” said Rex.

Rex looked down the road. “No.”

“My ears don’t do anything.”

Diana said, “I see everything.”

It didn’t get better any faster.

“Who else lives at the inn with you? Who both look at you like—”

Lily halted in her tracks.

Rex took two more steps before he realized that nothing was moving next to him, and then he turned around.

“Alright, yeah, they’re both pregnant, and it’s my kid.” Rex asked with his arms crossed. “Is there a problem with that?”

Rex said, “Well, it’s more like satisfied than proud.”

“That’s not a real voice.”

Rex looked at both of them, and they looked back at him. The morning street moved around them with the kind of indifference that only a city with things to do can have.

“Yes, they have a husband, and of course, it’s already my thing, and you both know that.”

Diana’s expression was a more restrained version of Lily’s happiness, reflecting her own style.

Lily said, “We want that,” after about ten seconds.

“What…?” Rex said.

“No fair! I want it too!”

Rex glanced at Diana, then at Lily, before turning his gaze to the road ahead.

“Why not?” Lily asked.

“I’m twenty,” Lily said. “Mara is thirty-eight, and the readiness gap seems to favor me.”

“Then what is it about?” Lily asked.

“It’s about timing,” Diana said, helping him.

“It’s the explanation I have,” Rex replied.

“Many things,” Rex said.

Rex looked at both of them walking beside him, which was the look of someone doing a rapid assessment and finding that the assessment was not resolving in a direction he wanted.

“That’s a scheduling objection,” Lily said, “not a readiness objection, and those are different things.”

“I know she’s right,” Rex said. “I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”

“When you get back from the expedition,” she said, her tone resembling that of someone filing a document under a specific date. “We should discuss it more.”

“Hm~! I get it, we’re going to continue discussing the starlight family,” Lily said, in the tone that indicated she had received an agreement and would be filing it accordingly.

The east gate came into view at the end of the street, and Rex could see the expedition team assembling at its base.

“We’re always careful,” Lily said.

“Those are different standards.”

“I reject it,” Lily said, “but I’ll think about it.”

Then he put an arm around each of them briefly, in a genuine manner rather than a performed one, and they walked the last block to the gate that way.

Elizabeth was already there, getting things ready for the expedition, and Alexander was next to her, looking like someone who had thought about what had happened the day before and was now in professional mode instead of ego mode, which Rex thought was a big change.

Nerith was present, her hair adorned with bright green leaves, a sign that she had come from a place where her focus had been directed outward.

Talyra leaned in. “Lily said something to us,” she said.

“Diana too,” Aisella added.

“They said to follow your lead and keep the formation intact,” Talyra said. “In those exact words.”

Rex looked at the two of them.

Talyra glanced at the collection of travel packages. Rex was carrying, in addition to his expedition pack, which was arranged in the configuration of someone who had accepted everything offered to them and had been trying to distribute the weight efficiently.

“You have,” she said, counting carefully like someone who was doing math, “four wrapped lunches, two extra preparations, and a standard expedition pack.”

“That’s six meals for a three-day trip with nine people, and each person is bringing their own food.”

Aisella looked at the packages, her expression indicating that she was deep in thought. “The Silver Rest,” she said.

Talyra looked at him for a second, and then the laugh came, real and short, the kind that catches someone off guard.

He also thought about the second-stratum personnel who were on standby until he issued clearance and Gelion, who was collaborating with Pavellia in the Underlayer. He would need to manage all these elements from within a cave system for the next three days.

Elizabeth stood at the gate and said nothing, which was her way of saying something.
